A Brief History Of The Church At Deerbrook
A small group of Christians began meeting in the winter of 1945 and
was then known as the Kinwood Church of Christ. The meeting place was in a tent
on the corner of Old Humble Rd (now known as the Eastex Freeway, Hwy 59)
and Mary Francis Street. The
church grew and soon moved to the corner of Old Humble Rd and Etheline
Street a block away. In
1963, the church began an aggressive building plan adding a large
classroom addition followed by the addition of a much-needed larger
auditorium that would seat about 450 people to eliminate the need of two
worship services on Sunday mornings. The church experienced a growth to about 300 people after a
short period of time so it was necessary to add more classrooms. The old auditorium building was
converted into classrooms, a fellowship area was added completing a
physical connection of all buildings and the enlarging of the parking
area in the rear.
Over the next few years the area began changing in its social and
economical makeup and the church began experiencing a decline in
membership. Our children grew up, starting their own families, and
moving off to other areas where their jobs carried them. We were meeting with about 60
people, mostly retired, when we were blessed with an opportunity to make
a change in location. The
Texas Highway Department over the years had purchased land from the church
on three separate occasions in order to build and expand the Eastex
Freeway. The third purchase
occurred in March, 1991, when the Highway Department bought all of the
property where the building stood not leaving us enough land to rebuild
in the same area.
The church had to relocate and the decision was made to purchase
land a little to the north in the Humble area. Land was purchased on
Kenswick Drive, Humble, Texas, in April, 1991, and for the next few months
we met in a motel meeting room. It
was decided that a name change was in order so the Deerbrook name was
chosen because of our proximity to the Deerbrook Mall. Construction on the new
building began in September, 1991.
We assembled for the first time in the new building on December
31, 1991. It was a joyous
occasion for all as we looked forward to reaching out to souls for
Christ in this new area. We
have enjoyed growth, both spiritually and numerically, and we give God
the glory. Our goal is to
serve Christ and we pray that we will always worship and serve Him
according to the pattern set forth in the New Testament.
